Letchworth Garden Square Shopping Centre
Letchworth Garden Square Shopping Centre selected the Building Blocks appeal as their Charity of the Year 2007/08.
However, before they started raising money for children, Centre Manager Colin Bell and his team wanted to do something positive for local Cancer Care and provide a month of entertainment for shoppers. The outcome of this was “Pink October”, five consecutive Saturdays featuring local dance groups who provided dance displays and an opportunity for shoppers and passers by to join in.
The combination of street collections, pink badge sales and a bountiful cake and samosa stall provided by the Lister Hospital's pharmacy department, raised over £6,000 during the month. A magnificent total and a real reflection on the generosity of the people of Letchworth who returned each week to see the dance performances.
The first official Building Blocks event was the arrival of Santa and his huskies and the grand Christmas Lights illumination.
The enhance herts Dancing Bear joined the Miss Christmasses and Danny the Snowman to provide a show for the 1000+ visitors to the town. Santa made many wishes come true for children and surprised their parents!
2008 will bring “July Dance Days” a further celebration of dance after the amazing feedback from Pink October. We hope to see lots of local people joining in with the dance groups and learning simple routines.
Many other events will be arranged through the year and in the meantime, you can support Building Blocks with Garden Square Shopping Centre by picking up a 50/50 moneybox or by purchasing a blue heart badge from:

50/50 Fundraiser for Schools
Letchworth Garden Square Shopping Centre's inventive management team came up with the idea for the 50/50 Fundraising Scheme to benefit both the Building Blocks appeal and local schools. Not only were they the brains behind the inspiration, they have also generously provided sponsorship to enable the fundraising scheme to be implemented in schools around Letchworth and Stotfold.
Any school in the vicinity of Letchworth can distribute moneyboxes to every child and receive half of the money raised for their own use! When the Building Blocks moneyboxes are full they can be returned to the school, to the cash office at the Lister Hospital or to the Letchworth Garden Square Shopping Centre Management Office.
Children receive a scratchcard with a chance to win a prize for every full moneybox they hand in.
