Building Blocks

Building Blocks aims to raise at least £100,000 a year to add value to the services provided to children and babies by East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.

We are delighted to have been selected as The Comet's charity of 2008, and look forward to the various fundraising initiatives that will take place during the year.

Donations to Building Blocks will be used for various purposes. We currently are raising funds at the Lister for specialized oxygen monitors in Children's A&E, to make part of Bluebell ward more ‘teenager friendly’ for adolescent patients, and for extra equipment in the Special Care Baby Unit. We also have ongoing requirements for equipment within maternity and the Special Care Baby Unit. At the QEII Hospital, we are developing the Tewin Child Development Centre, and need funds for various specialist pieces of equipment.

Renal Fund

The Lister Renal department is widely regarded as probably the foremost centre for dialysis research in the UK. Its research output is cited world-wide. To build on this status, the department is developing plans for a renal research institute to provide the space, equipment and infrastructure to take this excellent research one stage better.

The department is also undergoing an expansion of its haemadialysis services, to treat more people through dialysis each day. We have set a fundraising target of £100,000 to make sure this service is fully equipped and offers patients that little bit of extra attention.

CTRT Appeal

The Mount Vernon Cancer Centre is making a major contribution - nationally and internationally - to win the battle against cancer. It urgently needs more financial support to enable it to develop its research successes and to cope with growing numbers of patients that can benefit from research trials.

That is why we have launched a £1 million appeal. Donations, large and small, will be used to expand the research team of highly-skilled doctors, research fellows, nurses, data managers, pharmacists and technicians. Money will also be used to build a dedicated research unit where patients receiving chemotherapy can be treated and monitored. Research at Mount Vernon has led to major advances in cancer treatments prolonging and saving many lives. We want this process to continue. But we cannot do it without your help.
